Movember Part 2 - Month of awareness for the men in our lives » Empowered Women's Channel

Did you catch part 1 where we talked about make breast cancer and other harmful cocktails of chemicals the men around can absorb through their man beauty regime? Well here another interesting one on smell and natural alternatives.

What about how he smells?

Colognes/fragrances is another ingredient to be aware of. Colognes used to be made from natural ingredients like flowers and herbs. However, in the late 70s and early 80s, these formulations changed. Today, they are approximately 95-100% synthetic. Using crude oil or turpentine oil as the base material, synthetics are usually derived from chemical reactions. These compounds can be dangerous when inhaled or applied to the skin. They also contain many other carcinogenic chemicals, neurotoxins, respiratory irritants, solvents, aldehydes, hundreds of untested and unregulated petro-chemicals, phthalates (which can act as hormone disruptors), narcotics, and much more!

If this seems to cover all of your men’s personal care items, you are probably wondering what they can use instead!? Here are some healthier alternatives to some of the personal care products mentioned above using coconut oil as the base. Coconut oil can be used as the main ingredient for pretty much all body care products (organic extra virgin cold pressed unrefined coconut oil is best).

The shaving lotion

Apply a thin layer of coconut oil on the area to be shaved, and shave as usual. The lauric acid in the coconut oil will also serve as an antiseptic for cuts that result from shaving. Coconut oil is also naturally anti-fungal and anti-bacterial and can be used in place of deodorant.

Coconut oil antiperspirant

Mix coconut oil in a glass container with baking soda and arrowroot powder until ingredients are completely combined. You may add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to add a scent to your mixture. After the ingredients are mixed together, put it in a cool dry place and allow the mixture to sit for a few hours to harden up. Once the mixture has time to thicken you can easily scoop a little bit of it with your fingers and apply it by rubbing it into your underarms.

Essential oils

Not only are essential oils healing, they help elevate your mood and are of course the original unadulterated perfume. Throughout history oils such as Frankincense and Myrrh have been treasured as still are today. As more is known about essential oils and their many uses there are also many blends depending on what you want to achieve and the perfect cologne for your man.  He can also use essential oils mixed with coconut oil as it’s moisturising and smells great! Our Bo is a bit gaga over oils as is known for her scent of ‘Joy’ around her gym, if you want to know more about essential oils drop us an email or leave us a comment below.
