Inspirational women making a difference!

We are loving that there are so many inspirational women are changing the world and showing us that anything is possible. After watching these videos, you’ll know we can all contribute towards a better world too. No matter where or who you are we all have the choice to make the world a better place. We all have so much power and potential to make this planet a fair and beautiful place for us all to live in harmony.  You don’t need to be in a specific field, time or environment to make a difference in this world.

Inspirational women: The sleeping bag coat

Veronika Scott is the CEO and founder of The Empowerment Plan that empowers women to become more independent. She created a coat that doubles as sleeping bag for homeless people, but when she was told that they needed jobs more than coats, she stepped up to that challenge too and created new jobs and opportunities for some of the homeless people the coat was invented to help.

Inspirational women: He named me Malala

This gave us goosebumps and so inspiring – HE NAMED ME MALALA is an intimate portrait of Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Malala Yousafzai, who was targeted by the Taliban and severely wounded by a gunshot when returning home on her school bus in Pakistan’s Swat Valley. The then 15-year-old (she turns 18 this July) was singled out, along with her father, for advocating for girls’ education, and the attack on her sparked an outcry from supporters around the world. She miraculously survived and is now a leading campaigner for girls’ education globally as co-founder of the Malala Fund.

Nothing is impossible, the word itself says 'I'm possible'!

Inspirational women: I like being 98

Age is no barrier and no action no matter how small still changes the world and has a ripple effect. 98-year-old Evelyn is a friend to her neighbour Joyce and believes we should all contribute to society. She lives in a retirement community and proves it doesn’t matter how old you are you can always keep promises and do anything you put your mind too.

Life happens and it remains objective as if you are watching a movie until you slap a label on it: good or bad, healthy/unhealthy, safe/threatening… there are numerous labels we place on the situations that unfold before us in life, many of which cause excessive fear, worry and doubt leading to anxiety.

Choose your label, don't let your label choose you @LaurenEMiller7

One of the key components to maintaining inner peace in the midst of the wild kingdom moments in life is simply remembering that you choose the labels you place on life circumstances. Knowing this is empowering because if you choose to label a situation as threatening you always have the ability to adjust your perception of any situation to fit into positivity.

For example, you run into a colleague at work and they share with you that they are going to apply for the same in-house job promotion for which you just applied. In situations like this, it is very easy to  feel transported into an animal planet face off scene between two rams. Feeling threatened and territorial are two common inadequacyresponse labels.

Remembering that the stress response that often ignites fight, flight or freeze actions (all of which can be seen on Animal Planet) flow first and foremost from the label you place on the situation at hand: “I label this situation as threatening because I am afraid that something I WANT may be taken away from me.” This process happens at lightening speed leaving you spinning around in the negative emotions of fear and self-doubt, not even aware that you have a gap of EMPOWERMENT to choose your label.

Stress is simply the opportunity to identify and ADJUST your perception of any situation at hand. Begin again, even as you mentally muck around after the ego animal planet hit on your sense of safety and ability to handle life successfully.

You choose the labels you place on life circumstances action step: Adjust your label

Even though my colleague is applying for the position I want, I am willing to go for it anyway with confidence that my abilities and expertise easily and naturally align with this position. I choose to label this situation as an opportunity to remember that my worth and value stands separate from the actions of any human being around me today.

My personal trainer once told me that the average person will gain 7 to 10 lbs over the holidays.

I get it. The FOOD! I mean, how can you not?

I’m pretty much an expert in gaining and losing weight. My weight has yo-yo-ed throughout most of my life. I’d lose weight in the summer and then gain weight in the winter to lose weight again in the summer. Over and over again.

Sound familiar?

I’m happy to say I’ve been healing myself from multiple eating disorders over the last few years. My journey to health has taken a lot of awareness, attention and self love. While I’m in a much healthier mind-space than I’ve ever been, I admit, I do still feel the urge to overeat. Here are some things that have helped me stay on track while still enjoying some of my favorite decadent dishes.

10 Tips to Prevent Overeating During the Holidays

Stay hydrated

Many times we think we’re hungry when we’re actually just thirsty. By simply drinking enough water (I recommend at least 3 liters per day) we can help prevent ourselves from overeating. Next time you think you’re hungry, try drinking a glass or two of water and waiting 30 minutes before taking that first bite.

Reduce sodium

Have you ever noticed how many chips you eat if they are salted vs. unsalted? Salted chips are way easier to overeat than unsalted. Salt is a flavor enhancer and it can often guide how much you eat/overeat. Try the chip experiment at home if you’d like, or take my word for it. Reduce sodium, and you’ll find you don’t eat as much.

Eat clean. Most of the time

The more I eat a certain kind of food, the more I crave it. The more I eat fatty foods, the more I crave fatty foods. This also applies to sugary foods, salty foods, and (good news) healthy foods. The more often you eat clean, the more your body will naturally want to. The longer you do this, the less you’ll enjoy the decadent foods you once enjoyed.

Fill up first on salad, fruits and veggies

When you’re at a party, potluck or even out to dinner, fill up on salad, vegetables or fruit first. Then wait a while before diving into the more decadent foods. Because you’ve filled up first on the good stuff, you won’t have much more room for the bad stuff!

Only eat one plate

Do your eyes tend to be bigger than your stomach? As you approach the buffet table, stop for a moment and breathe. Decide ahead of time you’ll only enjoy on plate. Because a second plate is not an option, you’ll naturally enjoy what’s on your plate more.

Take your time

Slow down. Take a moment to admire your food before you eat it. Savor the fragrance and flavors of your meal. Chew your food properly. Don’t rush to take the next bite. Put your fork down between bites.

Still feel hungry?

Wait 20 minutes before eating more. This allows yourself time for your body to start digesting the food. It gives your stomach a chance to send signals to your brain, telling you that you’re full. More often than not, you’ll thank yourself for waiting.

Check in with yourself

Find yourself tempted to overeat? Check in with yourself. Ask yourself what’s going on: how are you feeling? Chances are some emotions are coming up. Are there other ways to deal with them other than with food?

Give away leftovers

Are the tasty leftovers you have in the fridge calling your name? Share the love and give them away! Invite friends over to enjoy what’s left of your feast so you’re not tempted with indulging.

Don’t feel guilty

Did you overeat anyway? That’s ok. Don’t feel guilty and start a shame spiral. Acknowledge what you’ve done and move on. Just because you overate for this meal doesn’t mean to say you have to overeat at the next one.

I hope you find these tips useful. Happy eating!

Cheers,
Amanda

Office yoga and a fresh air break

I think smokers who go outside for a smoke break often are as addicted to fresh air, sunshine and a break from their computer monitors as much as they are addicted to nicotine. Take your allowed smoke breaks and instead of taking a drag of a cigarette inhale clean fresh air, vitamin D and the view of the beautiful outdoors.

Office yoga / chair yoga

Spring_CleaningSpring has sprung! Which means it’s well overdue to get your cleanse on…

Embarking on a spring cleanse is nothing new and you can do this anytime. Our ancestors were hip happenin’ when it came to harnessing the benefits of this powerful and highly beneficial practice. Even if they had to do it out of necessity due to winter supplies running low.

If your heart rate quickened and your stomach jumped into your throat at the mention of the word “cleanse” fear not! Cleansing does not need to be a time of iron will and deprivation.

In fact excessive juice cleansing can really mess up your metabolism and digestive strength.

There’re many ways you can cleanse the body in a more balanced and gentle way that won’t result in a post cleanse binge fest.

Here are 11 easy ways to start spring cleansing…

Number 1

Reduce your intake of acid and mucus forming foods like meat, fish, poultry, dairy, eggs, and most grains (except millet and roasted buckwheat which are slightly alkalizing).

Number 2

Cut out sugar. Like completely. Sugar is not your friend. But you already know this 😉

Number 3

Add alkaline foods like fruits, vegetables, sprouts, herbs, and cereal grasses like wheatgrass. These will help to build an alkaline reserve for moments of stress, periods of little to no exercise, and poor dietary habits.

Number 4

Soak acid forming foods to make them more alkaline. The soaking process starts the alkalizing process. So get those whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds in the “tub”.

We are used to cleaning the outside house, but the most important house to clean is yourself - your own house - which we never do ~ Marina Abramovic
Click To Tweet

Number 5

Chew, chew, chew. Since your saliva is an alkalizing substance, making sure you thoroughly chew your food means it enters your body in a more alkaline state. Yes! Double life points!

Number 6

Give yourself a food curfew. By stopping eating 2 -3 hours before bed you give your body time to digest your last meal. That way when you sleep your body can focus on clearing other things out.

broccoli-steamed[divider]

Number 7

Know your detox type. If you’re cold then use more warming foods like steamed veggies and cooked grains. If you run a little hotter then focus on cooling foods like raw veggies and juices. If you’re deficient (thin and pale) then now may not be the time to fast or cleanse at all.

Number 8

Never eat to the point of fullness. Overeating is not only taxing on the system, but it’s also the fastest way to age yourself.

Number 9

Eat no more than 2 meals per day. This will allow your body time to clean house in between meals.

Number 10

Rest mentally and physically. Cleansing is a time to be gentle. Take naps, rest, read, go for an easy walk. Now is the time for living with ease.

Number 11

Try an enema. It’s important to keep your bowels moving while cleansing to help remove the toxins being released.

Remember that when it comes to cleansing slow and steady wins the race. Start slowly and end slowly. You don’t need to do a water fast right off the bat to cleanse your body. Eat simply, be gentle, and enjoy the heightened sense of taste and awareness around your body.

If you want to further your Spring Cleaning Cleanse, there is no better way to do it then to give your digestion a break and let your body Spring into healing and regeneration with juice fasting! Below, our gal Kimberly shares 5 great tips on how juicing can benefit the body.

5 Ways Juice Fasting Makes you Look and Feel Vibrant

Drinking only vibrant living juice and pure clean water for a short or long-term cleanse can drastically improve not only your health but also your life. Juice fasting is a
growing trend and it’s no secret why. Here are the top five reasons I am a repeated
faster for life.

I believe that the greatest gift you can give your family and the world is a healthy you ~ Joyce Meyer
Click To Tweet

1) Get the Juice Fasting Glow: Drinking juice one is of the most effective ways to get more
vitamins, minerals and enzymes into your beautifully functioning body. Vitamins, minerals, and enzymes heal your body from the inside out. Juice fasts rest your digestive tract, which is one of the most overworked systems in your body. The energy once used to break down foods is now used to kickstart your organs that are responsible for “getting the glow”. Increase the goods going in and help the toxins going out.  The results are bright eyes, clear skin, shiny hair, fresh breath and less body odor.

2) Kick old Habits: Got a sweet tooth? Love the carbs? Can’t kick the coffee cravings? Just a few days of juice fasting and your system will restart and help you to cold turkey that crap right out of your diet. Once your system gets clean, and you try to introduce the junk back in, your body will rebel and your once bad habits will be a thing of the past. With your new clean system your old bad habits will finally feel as bad as they actually were for you all along.

3) Mindful Juice Fasting: Juice fasting can have a profound effect on your connection with self, others and your environment. Without the clouds of toxins, stimulants and constant munching you will start to notice the more subtle things in life. Choose during your fast to smile at the grocery store clerk, drive slower to work and smell the flowers on your evening walk. Your mind and senses will be clear and your connections evermore powerful.

4) Extreme Energy: Juice fasting is like putting premium gas in your sports car instead of the cheap stuff. The new age body has become accustomed to undernourishment, malnutrition and a sever lack of minerals and enzymes. After the possible initial detox symptoms your body will kickstart into high gear. Functioning at a rate your body and mind will love. Expect a sharper mind, an extra mile and the desire to push it like a Porshe.

5) Connect with Source: Nearly every major religion on the planet references or still practices a form of fasting. The idea is to live simply, purify your temple and prepare for guidance from your source. Whether you believe in a form of God, divine energy or simply your connection to the universe you can find a greater connection through a juice fast, while still maintaining proper caloric intake and optimal levels of vitamins, minerals and enzymes essential for ideal health.  Whether you make the juices yourself or save a ton of time purchasing a juice fast from your local juice operations you can
dedicate the time you would have spent preparing, eating and cleaning your meals to your connection with your source. Strengthening your connection can lead to a more fulfilling, purposeful life.

Green Juice and Glowful Cheers!

If your anchor is made up of things, your boat will sink. If it’s made up of loving God, your neighbor and yourself, it will float.

When I was 16, I read every book available by Leo F. Buscaglia, Ph.D. otherwise known as the “love doctor” or “hug doctor.” I still reference a quote of his daily: “People before Things.” Remember, stress will appear when you forget to align yourself with what you value most in this life.

If you are a type “A” personality, then you are familiar with the speedboat approach to life. All too often, people get overlooked as you jet past towards your destination. I know because I was a type A, BC (before cancer). Facing my own death led me into the experience of lingering more in what I value most in the essentials of life.

Cigarette_speedboat

How many times do you bypass the opportunity to create a meaningful connection with a human being because you are racing through life? Love people, not things. Don’t wait until you find yourself on your deathbed to get this one. I assure you, you only remember the people and the love you shared. All things pass away except love.

What percentage of your words; thoughts; deeds and actions throughout your day align with the person you desire to be in this world and with what you value most? 10%? 50%? 70%? What comes up for you? This is a worthy practice that results in inner peace and definitiveness of purpose.

Try this simple technique..

At the beginning of the week simply choose 3 words that describe the person you are committed to being. Next write down 5 things you value most in life. Make these words your screensaver and reference them frequently.

Stress is simply your body’s way of inviting you to identify and adjust your perceptions and responses to life so that they more accurately align with the person you desire to be on a daily bases. Peace and confidence is your natural state of being when your words; thoughts; deeds and actions align with the person you have decided to be. Notice how quickly you get emotionally spun when you respond to life outside of your highest good? Live from the inside out, not the outside in.

Did I love? Did I allow love?

I remember after being told that I had a MRSA staph infection that had spread throughout my blood stream due to the infected third degree burns on my chest from the radiation/chemo combination, that I was in critical condition. Funny thing was, I felt fine inside my castle. Because I had made some internal shifts in my life, I knew that I was aligned with what was most important to me on a daily basis. I had pruned out of my life those things that had become weeds, which made room for new growth and positive learning opportunities. At this point in the 5 years of the cancer treatments I was at peace, whether I stayed or left was really no big deal yet because of my three young children I remember consciously making the choice to stay several times. My reflections that day flowed from two simple questions: How well did I love this past year and how well did I allow myself to be loved?

A people before things mentality creates the infrastructure which supports your highest good and the good of all concerned. At the sunset of this life everything melts down into this space.

A neti pot is a small container designed to clear nasal passages by rinsing out the nasalneti pot cavity. Warm salt and baking soda water or an over-the-counter saline nasal rinse is poured out of the spout of the neti pot into one nostril and runs out through the other nostril.

It naturally cleanses, refreshes, and protects the nasal passages, one of our body’s first lines of defense against illness. It might be weird to use at first but once you get the hang of it you will sail through cold season without a sniffle.

A neti pot is a natural alternative to over-the-counter chemicals and medications. Many patients find the neti pot to be more effective than medicine.

Tip#2 (Organic) Raw Local Honey…

honeyBeat Allergies with Honey

A spoonful of local honey helps with seasonal allergies. When it’s local the pollen in the air is the same as the pollen in your honey. This helps your body harmonize with it’s surroundings to reduce sniffles, and red itchy eyes.

It is important that we support local honey and also support locally grown organic produce, as agricultural chemicals are severely hurting the bee population. The chemicals that are being sprayed on flowers and vegetation in which bees pollinate are ingested by the bees, killing them so it is imperative we support organically grown fruits and vegetables if we want to save the bees!

It was Einstein who once said,

“If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe then man would only have four years of life left. No more bees, no more pollination, no more plants, no more animals, no more man.

If the bee disappears from the surface of the earth, man would have no more than four years to live”

Tip#3 – Dry Brushing and Body Scrubbing

Keep your largest organ happy…

Dry BrushingThis practice exfoliates the skin and stimulates circulation, resulting in smoother, brighter skin. Dry brushing stimulates the lymphatic system, which rids the body of waste.

Massaging the skin encourages the body to shed toxins and excess water to help reduce bloating. The increased circulation aids your immune system and may prevent you from getting sick. It’s a great daily practice because it naturally helps the detoxification process. Simply brush the skin with a natural bristled brush while the body is dry.

Skin Facts:

  1. Skin is the human body’s largest organ.
  2. The average skin, when stretched out, is 2 Square Meters
  3. Skin accounts for around 15% of your bodyweight

Tip#4 – Unplug

Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are a serious modern concern. And exposure is almost impossible to avoid.

We wake up, roll over and check Facebook. We watch TV while eating dinner. We go through the checkout line while talking on our cell phones. We text when we drive. Are you guilty of a few of these too?

Created by cell phones, power lines, computers and microwaves, as well as other electronic and magnetic devices, EMFs wreck havoc on the body. These fields induce brain fog, forgetfulness, anxiety, depression and chronic fatigue in those who are sensitive.

Unplug and preserve wellness…
unplug
Completely avoiding electromagnetic radiation is impossible. Yet minimizing exposure lessens the damaging impact on health. The first rule of thumb is to turn off and unplug appliances when not in use.

Turning off our TVs, Cell Phones and Computers can feel like a vacation. We are constantly connected via electronics. Disconnecting allows us to relax, be present, feel more alive and lower our levels of exposure.

Tip #5 –
This superfood has strong antibacterial, antiviral, and immune-boosting powers…

What are we talking about… Hot water and lemon every morning!

There are many health benefits of lemons that have been known for centuries.

When we sleep our body goes into a natural deep cleaning process. When we wake toxins that were purged over the night still linger.

Hot water rushing through your body helps to break up the gunk and rinse it out through your elimination systems.

The Lemon is a natural cleanser; it alkalizes the body and tastes great! Have your hot water with lemon immediately upon rising to help flush toxins and ignite the digestive fires.

How to do it…  lemon water

You should be using purified water and it should be lukewarm not scalding hot. You want to avoid ice cold water, since that can be a lot for your body to process and it takes more energy to process ice cold water than the warm. Always use fresh lemons, organic if possible, never bottled lemon juice. I squeeze 1/2 a lemon with each glass and drink it down first thing before I eat a single thing, or workout, etc.

TIP #6 – Habits of Healthy Eaters: Shop the Perimeter

store perimeter

You want to eat better, right?

When shopping at your favorite grocery store avoid the middle aisles. The products on the middle aisles are typically “shelf stable.” This means they can be on the shelf for long periods of time without them going bad.

Foods like this are often preserved with chemicals to make them safe for their long shelf life. What’s good for a long shelf life is not good for our bodies. The foods on the perimeter of the grocery store are typically preserved with temperature. Making them fresher and better for you.

Stick to the outer edges of the store, and stick to your healthy eating plan!

If you write a shopping list, you’re more likely to stick to it and go straight for the things you need. If you’re well-planned and disciplined you can avoid the tempting calls from the junk food aisles and save yourself (and your family) from empty calories.

TIP #7 – Develop a solid relationship with your body…

Find a “workout” that works for you. Our body craves movement and will function most effectively when it is being moved regularly. But when exercise feels like a chore to you, you are less likely to keep it up. Find an exercise that lights you up. Make it fun, exciting and new. Yoga, Hikes, Spin, Sex, Surfing.

Movement also has incredible physical and emotional benefits, like reducing blood pressure, improving mood, boosting energy, and even improving learning.

As long as you are moving your body is happy!move your body

So get moving! Make a list of all the fun activities that you enjoy doing or would like to try and then make it a priority to include at least a few of these mind and body friendly forms of exercise into your schedule each week.

It’s easy to make excuses for not exercising when it’s boring or unenjoyable, but when you find forms of movement that you actually enjoy it will be easy to find motivation for making them happen.

Tip #8 – Do you love the consistency and familiarity of the known?

Why is it that so many of us have difficulty in dealing with change?

As humans we all feel the need to create consistency in our lives. After all consistency helps us feel grounded.

Change comes in a variety of sizes, shapes and flavors. Whether your job has been eliminated, a competitor just outflanked you with a new product, you’ve had a personal loss or rules have evolved as have the way you do things, it’s how you choose to look at and deal with change that matters most.
TIME FOR CHANGEChanging your routine can help to keep things fresh, new and vibrant. Try a new exercise, spend time with a new friend or drive a new way to work.

Changes makes you flexible. Being stubborn and resistant to new things will make a normally stressing situation even more so. Change helps you be fluid and go with the flow.

“Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” ― Mahatma Gandhi

TIP #9 – You need to disconnect to reconnect…

When did we get so addicted to it all?

Is this you?

You wake up, roll over and check Facebook. You watch TV while eating dinner. You immediately have to check that text message, you refresh to see what’s in your inbox and you think I can watch just one more episode before I got to bed even though it’s 2am and I have work tomorrow?

social media“Researchers linked social media use to the reward center of the brain that’s associated with preservation of our social reputation, whereas another preliminary study found compulsive Internet use may induce changes in some brain reward pathways that are similar to drug addiction” ~ medicaldaily.com

So what’s all that incoming information doing to us? It’s creating world of people who are stressed out, disconnected in social situations, exhausted and perpetually teetering on the brink of a cold or worse, because their immune systems are similarly fried. In short, our tech-tethered lives are making millions unwell.

Learn to disconnect to reconnect to life. By doing so, you’ll be able to recharge your body and mind, get in tune with with your creative side, improve your mood, boost concentration and make room for new intellectual connections you’d probably not have made had you been glued to a screen.

Try this for 7 days…
At 9pm turn off your phone, don’t watch TV or check social media before bed. Instead have a conversation with a loved on at home, read a book or simply just sit and listen to calming music.

Tip #10 – If you can’t pronounce it don’t eat it…

Is this statement outdated?

Every single food substance known to man is composed of chemicals. Water is H20 and oxygen to breathe is O2 but it does not mean either of them are unhealthy. And while some sort of fizzy drink might list “juice” or “natural flavoring” which sounds absolutely healthy, it actually is not natural nor is it healthy (most all added sugar and factory made flavors and preservatives).

If you are interested in being healthy, start reading your labels and question what is in there and if it is safe. We need to be aware of where the food comes from, what’s in it and how it’s grown. vegetable-basket

None of us are perfect and we live in the modern world, so obviously every meal and snack we have will not be made up of wholefoods. However, if we aim for them to make up 75 – 80 percent of our diet it will go a long way towards preventing disease and slowing down aging.

Eating whole foods is about reclaiming our health and redefining the very meaning and nature of eating and food. It is about being open to ideas that challenge the myths of the dominant culture in which we have all been indoctrinated – to critically examine longstanding “truths” that have been drummed into us by our parents, teachers, doctors, and society.

Tip #11 – Why your body will thank you…

I am often amazed by the perfection of the universe. When we look closely you will notice how all things are in perfect harmony. Did you know that if you eat what is growing abundantly in season that it will help your body by balancing itself throughout the year?  Watermelons cool us in the summer, asparagus cleanses us in the spring and pumpkins ground us in the fall.

More reasons to eat seasonally…

  1. Easy on the Wallet – When produce is in season locally, the relative abundance of Eat localthe crop usually makes it less expensive
  2. It’s the Taste That Counts – When food is not in season locally, it’s either grown in a hothouse or shipped in from other parts of the world, and both affect the taste.
  3. Save Nutrients – transporting produce sometimes requires irradiation (zapping the produce with a burst of radiation to kill germs) and preservatives (such as wax) to protect the produce which is subsequently refrigerated during the trip. Freshly ripened and picked produce also contains more nutrients than pre-picked produce that was ripened on the shelf.

So support your local economy and be healthier for doing so!

Tip #12 – It could aid weight loss…

When we are born we are nearly 75% water. As we age, our body’s water percentage drops about 10%. Youth = Water. Drink as much pure, high PH, high mineral water you can get your hands on. Buy yourself a pretty glass water bottle and keep it full. This will help you shed toxins, reduce wrinkles and keep all your systems flowing smoothly. Bonus! Water helps you to feel full leading to less overeating.

raspberry-water

TIP: If it is hard for you to drink plain water, add some fresh cut cucumber, mint, watermelon, lemon, limes, oranges, etc for extra added flavor!

Tip #13 – One simple way to detox…

This ancient healing art dates back to China, 2,700 years B.C. Hippocrates, the Romans, Europe, Great Britain and France have all been known to celebrate the benefits of a salt bath. It is great for detoxification, it helps heal tired muscles and achy joints, it’s deliciously relaxing and may even help with arthritis. Energy healers and mystics use salt water to help clean and clear ones Aura. A simple delight to nurture your soul.

saltFYI: Epsom salt is one of the best type of salt for healing and detoxification and can easily be found at your local pharmacy or supermarket.

Tip #14 – Why clean out your kitchen?

How can you soar like an eagle when you are surrounded by turkeys?

You can’t eat bad if the bad foods are not there.

Once you have committed to a healthier lifestyle it’s a good time to clean out yourclean_kitchen cupboards and fridge of foods that no longer serve you. Leave the fruits, veggies, clean animal products and wholesome grains. Clean out the chemically ridden, high fructose corn syrup and GMO foods. Read the labels.

Throw out the old and make new space for healthy foods to live.  Even the new spacious cupboards and refrigerator will bring you a sense of calm.

Tip #15 – Don’t let your kitchen have all the fun…

clothes-hangersI love the Buddhist philosophy of letting go of something old to let something new in.

After you spring clean your closet, apply the one in one out rule.

If you buy a beautiful new tank top donate or discard one old tank top that you barely wear. This keeps your closet clean year round with new beautiful garments and accessories that you totally love to wear!

Tip #16 – Coconut oil is one of the few foods that can be classified as a “superfood”

Coconut oils is amazing stuff!

Its unique combination of fatty acids can have profound positive effects on health including fat loss, better brain function and many other amazing benefits.

Keep a jar of unrefined, cold pressed, raw coconut oil around to keep everything moving coconutsmoothly.

I use it to as lotion to moisturize my skin instead of lotions with harsh chemicals.
Our skin soaks up whatever you lather on.

Coconut oil is great as a deep conditioner, a coffee creamer and even as a personal lubricant.

It is antibacterial, antimicrobial and the medium chain triglycerides in coconut oil have been shown to significant enhance weight loss efforts over time.

Tip #17 – Also known as “kavala” or “gundusha,” is an ancient Ayurvedic dental technique…

Oil pulling is an Ayurvedic technique that may date back as many as 5000 years. Oil pulling feels good, it is good for your body and it even helps you look your best too.

How to do it?
Take a tablespoon of cold pressed unrefined oil into your mouth upon rising. Swish it around in your mouth for at least 10 min. After your done swishing, simply
spit the oil down the drain.

Why do it?
The oil will help to pull toxins from your gum line, it can help break up plaque, it keeps dry mouths lubricated and it can even whiten teeth.

I particularly like the 10 min of silence oil pulling requires of me in the morning. We often are rushing around from the minute we get up so I force myself to use this quite time to journal, dry brush, prepare my neti pot and my cup of warm water with lemon or do this while taking a shower. This little bit of self-care in the morning can go a long way for your physical and mental health.

Tip #18 – Connect to nature…

Field_of_flowers
Our body is a conduit of source energy. It is how we experience the natural world around us.

When we take time to fully experience our surroundings and to notice the masterpiece all around us we are imminently filled with divine source energy.

Whatever you do try to get outside as much as possible, move your body and connect with this beautiful planet.

Tip #19 – Eat more greens!

Even with gazillions of diets out there for you to follow, there is one rule that is pretty much standard across the board…green kale

Add more fresh organic greens to your diet!

Stick a handful of greens in your morning smoothie or scramble, create a glorious lunch salad or create a sautéed lemony green dish to accompany dinner.

Greens are low in calories but high in benefits; perfect for someone looking to
improve their diet!

Tip #20 – Eat Less Meat

Before you decide you want to quit the 21 day cyber cleanse, I’m not saying you need to give up meat altogether. I’m just saying that most successful long term eating plans stress the importance of limiting your meat and animal protein intake.

Consuming too much cooked and processed animal products can clog your arteries and contribute to high cholesterol. And factory farming is bad for the environment. Stick to a variety of fruits, vegetables, (from all colors of the rainbow) and other whole foods to make up most of your diet and then a tiny portion would be for anything else.
rainbow
If you get the occasional craving for a burger like many of us do, try to spoil yourself by having a hormone free, local, free-range burger from your favorite local restaurant or health food store.

Try to limit your meat intake most often and often apply a meatless Monday rule ~
Skipping all meat product on a Monday.

Give it a try and see all the amazing benefits Mooove in.

Tip #21 – Find a Furry Friend!

Give an animal a hug!

chihuahua puppyA furry friend benefits your life beyond measure. Their unconditional love makes them natural mood enhancers.

Pets help to lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels too. They are good for your heart and they encourage you to move your body with them. Walks, fetch or any pet play is amazing for your body.

Furry friends encourage you to be more social like hanging at the dog park or
volunteering at the local cat rescue club. Pets even help decrease allergies and
strengthen immunities. Some argue that they can help calm ADHD and many would argue that owning a pet is a good idea.

Either way we share our beautiful planet with all the furry animals and they deserve just as much love and respect as we do!

We hope you’ve enjoyed and been inspired to try something new on this 21 day challenge with us and please come over to the website and leave us a comment and spread the love!

Fear is a common and totally natural emotional experience. It’s helped us survive since the days of cavemen (and cavewomen!), serving as an internal guide to keep us safe from harm. But for many of us, fear can become an overwhelming and all-consuming way of life. And when fear dominates our existence, there’s little room in life to do anything more than simply survive.

My relationship with fear…

Having dealt with anxiety and panic disorder since childhood, I can attest to the limiting boundaries living a fear-based existence can place on our lives and our happiness. While I am a very social person and always ready to jump at new life experiences, I lived with this internal, incessant drone of thoughts coming from my inner voice that critiqued, criticized, and ran a never-ending commentary of every action I took. As you can imagine, it was both tiring and utterly overwhelming.

“Never give in to the obstacles that lie in your path towards the achievement of your dreams.” ― Lailah Gifty Akita
Click To Tweet

Naturally, my constant negative thoughts gave way to living in “survival mode,” always waiting for something to happen. My quality of life plummeted and my blessed life began to feel empty. Living with fear at every thought and every turn, I began to believe my fears were real. And while I consider myself an optimist, my fear-based thought process took complete control of my life – and ultimately gave way to a full-blown nervous breakdown.

For me it took having that breakdown to break free from my fear-based lifestyle. But you don’t have to go that route (nor do I recommend it!). We all experience fear in our lives. And as I said before, there are times it can actually be a very good thing. As humans, it’s natural for us to have rational and irrational thoughts. It’s when we begin to buy into or believe those irrational thoughts that problems arise.

As part of my build-up after breaking down – or breaking free as I like to say these days – I gathered up a ton of courage and faced my fears head on. Was it difficult? Yes, and scary, too!

Why you should make fear your best friend

In confronting my fears and even befriending them, I learned a lot about where my anxiety and discomfort was coming from. I took what I learned from my new friend, Fear, and used it to help me shift from merely existing to living a thriving and fulfilling life!

Below are six steps I used to befriend my fear-based thoughts and open up my mind – and life – to happiness and contentment:

Clear Your Mind

Go for a run, take a yoga class, meditate. Maybe use essential oils, get a massage or do some simple breathing exercises. Do whatever makes you feel good from the inside out. When our minds are free from clutter we’re better able to judge whether our thoughts are rational or not. It builds up our internal resources and helps us let go of the thoughts – and fears – we don’t need in our life.

Call It Out

Write it down, send it to yourself in an email or even say it out loud. What does that fear look like now? How does it sound? Putting words – not just thoughts – to your fears makes them more physical and tangible. You have something to look at or hear out loud. And looking or listening to them takes on a whole new (and probably irrational-sounding) perspective.

Do Some Digging

Where is this fear coming from? Why does this keep popping up in your mind? What’s the deeper message? Maybe there’s something in your life you feel is unresolved, or maybe you need to learn more about a situation to better understand it. Finding the holes in what you know can make a huge difference in your understanding and acceptance of things in your life. It serves as a compass to guide you toward the areas of your life that need some more work, some more nurturing and love.

dig

Tune In to You

When are you having these fears? Are there patterns you can pick up on or triggers you can look out for that might kick up these fear-based thoughts? Pay attention to the times when these thoughts are shouting out to you. Make a mental note or even write down what’s going on around you, where you are and what you’re doing when they arise. You may start to see some patterns arise, which you can use to plan ahead for when those times come back around. And as you uncover those patterns, you’ll be much more prepared and able to shift toward new ways of thinking next time.

Be Right Here, Right Now

One of the biggest things that helped me get over my fear-based lifestyle was in learning how to be present and mindful – and to stop future-tripping! I was constantly in this cycle of “shoulds” and “what ifs.” By learning how to keep my thoughts in the present moment, I squashed a ton of fears. And if they popped up again, I’d work toward getting back to the moment at hand and say goodbye to those thoughts!

Time

This is a tough one, but give yourself time! Changing ingrained thought patterns doesn’t happen immediately. It takes consistent work – yes, WORK – to reroute our thoughts and lay down tracks for new thought patterns to emerge. But trust that with time and consistency, your patterns will change.

Kindness + Love

Treat yourself well during this challenging, but fulfilling process. Be nice to yourself. And if you feel that’s difficult, recruit someone close to you for support and encouragement. Be gentle with yourself, and take care of your heart and soul. If something doesn’t feel good, listen to your intuition – it may not be the right moment for you. That doesn’t mean run the other way and drop all the hard work you’ve done, but rather be conscious that there will be times when you may not have the internal resources to work through these fears.

Above all, the most important thing you can do to overcome fear-based thoughts is to show yourself a whole lotta love. Hiding away from fear can feel easier in the moment – but that comes from our internal survival mechanism that’s constantly being activated. Survival trumps happiness every time. As you go into this process, know it will be difficult at times, but don’t let that hold you back. Doing the hard work is not only rewarding, it also opens up your mind and life to a world of limitless possibilities.

Fear is a natural, and at times useful, part of life. But when it begins to paralyze our life, it’s time to take back control. Making fear your friend will uncover the areas of your life that aren’t serving you well, and will open it up to the wonderful blessings it has to offer. With time, consistency, a few strategies and buckets of love for the amazing individual you are, you’ll regain control of your life and come out infinitely happier than before.

To Die For : are toxic dyes making you sick?

Toxic dyes vs Natural Dyes

Natural plant-based dyes are better for your health than toxic dyes.

Did you know you could be walking around wearing a mix these toxic ingredients: cancer causing amines, heavy metals, arsenic, formaldehyde, petrochemicals, chlorine bleach and other carcinogens? Yes indeed! These are all ingredients that are used to make up synthetic conventional clothing dyes. Toxic dyes in our clothing is not something most of us consider to be an important factor in regards to our health, but with so many people getting sick we need to look at everything we do and consume.

What impact do these toxic dyes have on your health?

Your skin is your largest organ of the body, absorbing over 60% of whatever it comes in contact with (including the chemicals found in your clothing). What goes on the skin absorbs into your body. As we are becoming more and more aware of how the chemicals in our consumer products affect our health, it is important to take note of what your clothing may contain as well.

Question: Have you ever worn a pair of jeans that turned your legs blue?

Chemical toxic dyes on clothing can continue to bleed for the lifetime of the garment.

How to protect yourself – know your dyes!

There are basically four categories of clothing dyes:

  1. Synthetic/conventional
  2. Azo free/low impact
  3. GOTS certified
  4. Organic/natural/clay and plant-based dyes

Most synthetic fabrics contain synthetic dyes also known as azo dyes. These dyes contain chemical carcinogens like; petrochemicals, formaldehyde, amines, and heavy metals, ingredients that are all known to cause cancer, disrupt your hormones and cause other ailments such as infertility, respiratory diseases, and contact dermatitis. These dyes can affect a person’s health via water exposure, inhalation, and skin contact.

Azo free dyes are still chemical based, they are just free of the azo compounds and toxic heavy metals. So this is a better option; however, they are still chemical based and can impact ones’ health.

GOTS certified dyes have imposed regulations and standards. GOTS dyes are prohibited from containing toxic materials including heavy metals, flurocarbons, ammonia, bleaches and formaldehyde. Therefore all the GOTS dyes are certified as “nontoxic” and have been tested to not cause any dermatological health affects. GOTS dyes are usually found in many certified organic and natural fibered clothing. It is important to note that these dyes are still synthetically based which can compromise the integrity and nature of an organic garment if you are looking for a truly 100% pure organic garment. Therefore, if you have extreme sensitivities or prefer a garment that is made only from organic ingredients, opt for a garment that has either been colored with clay dyes or botanically derived materials.

Naturally derived clay and plant-based dyes are the most ideal dyes to have in your clothing. Plant-based dyes are made from naturally derived ingredients such as roots, nuts, flowers, clays, and tree barks. Dating back to 3,000 BC, plant-based dyes are the oldest dye method and now unfortunately the least common, due to time and cost.

There is a no dye way…

Another option is to look for organic/natural fibered clothing that has not been dyed. This fabric is often labeled as “Natural” or PFD (prepared for dye). Although, you want to make sure the fabric has not had any chemical whitening agents added to it during the manufacturing process. Additionally, you can look for clothing made from naturally colored fibers such as those from naturally colored organic cotton, coming in beautiful shades including green, pink and blue! The color of the cotton crop remains within the fibers and the end result is a healthier happier you!

Synthetic toxic dyes are destroying our environment!

There is no proper disposal of waste sludge from synthetic toxic dye production. These hazardous chemicals end up finding their way into our waterways and soil. In fact, 20% of fresh water pollution comes from textile treatment and dying. Additionally, being made from unsafe substances these dyes are not biodegradable, adding chemicals into our landfills and the ecosystem.

Incineration/burning of these synthetic materials is the only way to truly dispose of them; which in-turn emits toxic residues into the air. The end result and consequence of these pollutants into our precious ecosystem is yet another factor affecting our health as a generation.

toxic dyes and Woman at river

Planet Earth is at a toxic crossroad…

It is vital what we choose to put on and into our bodies and into our ecosystem. Our current state of health along with the health of our future generations are dependent on the choices we decide to live by each day. If we continue to support petrochemical industries and synthetically derived everything, we will continue to see ill effects to our health and our environment. Choose to vote with your dollars and support organic and naturally derived products. Our future depends on it!

What actions can you take today to help the planet and yourself

This video explains well the cost of fashion on the planet and now that you have read about the toxic dyes that might be lurking in your clothing, time to really think about how you use your purchasing power to keep yourself and our world healthy. What small change will make today towards a better future?
